Hi {{ first name | reader }},
Happy Friday, 315. The last full week of August is bracketed by two of the biggest things this region does all year. The 79th NYS Woodsmen's Field Days open this morning at the Boonville-Oneida County Fairgrounds and run through Sunday, with logging competitions, forestry exhibits and a midway. Then on Wednesday the Great New York State Fair opens in Syracuse and stays open 13 days through Labor Day. Admission is $8, kids 12 and under and seniors 65 and over are free, and the gates run 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The music slate is the strongest of the summer. Indigo Girls play the orchard at Beak & Skiff on Sunday. Pitbull brings Lil Jon to Lakeview on Wednesday. Sublime headlines CMAC on Saturday with The Ataris and Bedouin Soundclash, and Luke Bryan takes the same stage Wednesday. Tonight Rhiannon Giddens leads the Silkroad Ensemble at The Vine at del Lago to close out the Skaneateles Festival. Kevin and Michael Bacon play the Clayton Opera House Saturday and Sunday, both nights sold out.
The North Country spends the week on engines and water. Jeeps take over Cerow Recreation Park in Clayton on Saturday for the second River Wrangler Rally. Brew York turns ten on the Sackets Harbor Polo Field on Friday and Saturday. On Thursday the Bassmaster Elite Series closes its regular season out of Clayton Harbor, with 7 a.m. takeoffs and 3 p.m. weigh-ins on the public dock, while 400 acres of Cape Vincent farmland turn into mud pits and trails for Grime & Octane.
Quieter picks worth the drive: Baltimore Woods runs Night Buggin' on Saturday night, lights and white sheets and a walk to see what turns up. Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls holds a free Equality Weekend from Friday through Sunday, with ranger talks, Elizabeth Cady Stanton living history and the Terra String Quartet. Rice Creek starts its guided walks Saturday at 11. And the Smith Opera House screens CatVideoFest at 3 on Sunday, which is exactly what it sounds like. This week's Foodie Corner heads up Route 12 to Boonville for Mercer's Dairy, the milk plant that talked New York into putting wine in ice cream. More on that below.

Mercer’s Dairy - Boonville

Mercer's Dairy sits at 13584 State Route 12 in Boonville, a couple of minutes from the fairgrounds where the Woodsmen's Field Days are running all weekend. It is a working milk plant with a retail counter on the front, and it is the reason a lot of people outside Oneida County know Boonville at all.
The dairy dates to 1951, when Ira Barnard sold his milk plant on Post Street and the house next door to Earl Mercer for $35,000. Mercer bought a two and a half gallon ice cream machine the same year. By 1963 he had turned it into an equal share corporation with Robert Mercer, James Mercer and Harlan Bellinger, running stores in Boonville, Stokes and Lyons Falls. Earl sold his share to his daughter Mary and her husband Bob Wetmore in 1973. Nine farm families from Lewis and Jefferson counties bought the company in 2002, and since 2013 two of those families have owned it outright, which makes it family and female owned.
The counter scoops more than 30 traditional flavors plus soft serve, milkshakes, banana splits and homemade ice cream cakes. What made them famous is the wine ice cream, which debuted in June 2007 and took Best New Product at the Great American Dessert Expo. There are ten varietals: Chocolate Cabernet, Cherry Merlot, Port, Shiraz, Spice, Red Raspberry Chardonnay, Riesling, Peach White Zinfandel, Lemon Sparkling and Strawberry Sparkling. The store side carries Lowville cheese curd, Croghan bologna, Amish butter, Black River Valley Farms eggs and Swiss'er Sweet maple syrup, which makes it a North Country grocery run disguised as an ice cream stop.
Tripadvisor ranks it second of fourteen places to eat in Boonville at 4.5 stars, with about twenty reviews on Yelp. Set your expectations right: this is a plant store with a counter, not a dining room, so you order and you take it outside. They also run facility tours if you want to watch the ice cream actually get made. Open Monday to Thursday 9 to 6, Friday and Saturday 9 to 7, and Sunday 10 to 6, which covers every day of Woodsmen's weekend.
