Hi {{ first name | reader }},
Happy Friday, 315. The weekend goes loud. Clinton Square fills for the Syracuse Latino Festival on Saturday, noon to 10pm and free, with Anthony Colon and Tony Rivas on the stage and a dominoes tournament on the square. Billy Idol brings DEVO to the Lakeview amphitheater that same night, while out at Sharkey's in Liverpool the Endless Fires Festival stacks GWAR, Three 6 Mafia and Circle Jerks across two days. Slightly Stoopid closes it all out at Beak & Skiff on Sunday.
There's a gentler track running underneath. The Skaneateles Festival plays its closing stretch, chamber music at First Presbyterian on Friday and a bluegrass night with Jason Carter and Michael Cleveland at Anyela's Vineyards on Saturday. Syracuse Shakespeare-in-the-Park gives The Taming of the Shrew its final three performances at Thornden Park. Then the midweek belongs to CMAC: Josh Groban with the Rochester Philharmonic on Tuesday, Brandi Carlile with I'm With Her on Thursday.
The North Country, meanwhile, raises the black flag. Bill Johnston's Pirate Days runs all three days in Alexandria Bay, with a pirate invasion at Scenic Park Dock on Saturday and a grand parade stepping off Sunday at noon. Croghan answers on Thursday with its village street fair on the St. Stephen's church lawn, rain or shine.
Quieter picks: Capitolfest screens three days of silent and early-talkie rarities with live organ at the Rome Capitol, Fort Stanwix stages a free Siege of 1777 encampment on Saturday, and Granby floats its second annual Balloons Under the Moon glow on Wednesday evening. This week's Foodie Corner heads to Route 31 outside Canastota for Flo's Diner, where the coffee has cost a dime since 1976. More on that below.

Flo's Diner - Canastota

Flo's Diner sits at 3223 Route 31, ten minutes east of the Onondaga County line and just outside Canastota village. It's a hundred-seat roadside diner with ten counter stools, cash only, no QR codes, no tablets. And the coffee costs ten cents. It has cost ten cents since the day the doors opened in 1976.
Florence and Harold Hoch converted an old snowmobile shop into the diner that carries her name. Flo had worked diners her whole life, never went to high school, and built the place on instinct without a day of advertising. Her daughter Sue Hoch Brown owns it now, Sue's daughter Jodi Marsala waits tables, and Jodi's own daughter serves too. Four generations, one building. Sue puts the dime coffee simply: "That was my mom's thing. She started it, and I'm not ending it. She believed everybody deserved an affordable breakfast or dinner out."
Flo's Big Breakfast is the flagship at $10.95: two eggs, bacon, sausage links, home fries, toast and buttermilk pancakes. Flo's Slop ($10.75) piles scrambled eggs with home fries, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, pepperoni, sausage and ground tavern ham. The gravy is made from scratch every morning and a side costs a dollar. Six-inch cookies wait at the register, and on Wednesdays from May through fall the parking lot turns into a car show with a chicken and biscuits special.
Reviewers put Flo's at 4.5 stars across 357 ratings, and the diner's Facebook page shows 90 percent of 1,154 reviewers recommending it. The one thing to know before you go: it's cash only, with an ATM on site. Open 8am to 9pm, every day. Go for the Big Breakfast, stay for the dime coffee, and don't be surprised when the server knows the name of the regular two stools down.
